A blog series responding to Thinking Strategically About Mineral Governance Funding: Perspectives on Current and Future Priorities.
As demand for minerals has rapidly increased in recent years – to serve energy transitions, economic development, AI and digitization, and growing defense budgets – the expansion of mining and mineral supply chains is impacting countries, communities and ecologies across the globe. How this expansion unfolds and who will benefit or bear the costs of these developments is largely determined by how the sector is governed.
In Thinking Strategically About Mineral Governance Funding: Perspectives on Current and Future Priorities, the authors draw on dozens of interviews and available data to identify recent and anticipated trends in funding to support better governance of mining and mineral supply chains. The funding scan offers broad observations about the types of mining, target actors, geographies, thematic issues, and strategies and approaches that are receiving more orand less attention from funders. It also shares insights into how funding decisions are made and implemented and ways in which these might be reoriented to improve prospects of impact. The analysis was intended to be a conversation starter – an input to catalyze forward-looking discussions among and across funders and implementing parties on implications, strategic priorities and pressing gaps.
As a complement to webinars and other virtual convenings, this blog series builds on the funding scan, with experts taking up or reacting to specific observations in greater depth from their individual perspectives. While the funding scan attempted to cover a broad breadth of ground, the blogs provide an opportunity for authors to shed light and share reflections on specific points or issues in more nuanced ways. Blogs will be published over the course of late 2026-early 2027. Those interested in contributing should contact the authors of the report at [email protected].
