Can Philanthropy Rescue Democracy with a “Democracy Corps”? In the wake of sweeping cuts to USAID and the State Department under the Trump administration, nearly 200,000 democracy and development experts have been laid off or furloughed. In a new Chronicle of Philanthropy op-ed, Michael Jarvis and Dean Jackson argue that philanthropy has a unique opportunity to harness this untapped expertise to strengthen democracy at home. By funding a national “Democracy Corps” fellowship—modeled after programs like Report for America—grant makers could embed skilled professionals in nonprofits across the U.S. to combat polarization, rebuild trust, and bolster civic engagement, all for a fraction of current democracy funding.
